I first saw Joanna Newsom play on BBC2 in November 2004 and was dutifully impressed. Being a musical scholar she builds her songs (usually played on harp or piano) with unusual rhythms dug up from folk traditions. She sings like a child, which can be quite off-putting sometimes, but in small doses it's really very endearing!
